About Mat & Alex

Tickner’s Structural & Finish Carpentry was founded by long-time friends Mat and Alex, combining decades of hands-on craftsmanship with professional business management. The idea for the company came from Alex, who recognised the opportunity to build a business around Mathew’s skill and reputation, supported by strong financial planning and customer service.

Mat began his journey in construction at 17, labouring for Richard Norton and working alongside various trades. He found a natural talent for carpentry while helping his brother on site — a skilled carpenter who quickly spotted Mat's potential and encouraged him to take it further. Mat proved to be a quick learner, and by 20, despite already being highly capable on site, he completed a two-year NVQ in carpentry with ease.

From there, Mat worked with a range of companies, picking up valuable skills from experienced tradesmen and refining his abilities in all areas of the trade — from heavy-duty structural first fix to detailed second fix and bespoke joinery. Eventually, he went self-employed and took on all types of carpentry work, developing a reputation for reliability, precision, and pride in his work.

Alex comes from a financial services background and brings business knowledge, structure, and organisation to the company. While Mathew leads on-site operations, Alex ensures that Tickner’s Structural & Finish Carpentry runs smoothly behind the scenes, handling finance, planning, and business development.

Together, they’ve built a company that reflects their shared values: high standards, honest work, and delivering projects that are as structurally sound as they are beautifully finished. At Tickner’s Structural & Finish Carpentry, it’s all about strength in structure, excellence in finish.
